EMDR Intensives

Why intensives?

Concentrating EMDR sessions into a few intensive days can significantly accelerate your progress and healing. This deep immersion yields results quickly, empowering you to reach your goals in days instead of months.

Some people choose intensives over weekly or bi-weekly sessions because:

  • They have time-sensitive goals and need to make progress quickly

  • Their work schedules don’t allow for weekly sessions

  • They feel stuck in treatment or haven’t made progress with the weekly, 50-minute model

  • They don’t want to leave their regular therapist, but want to use EMDR to resolve an issue

  • Or they are tired of feeling stuck and are ready to simply dive in and make some substantial progress

Step 1: Consult

We will do a no-cost 30-minute consultation to determine if you are a good fit for intensives. We will look at dissociation, trauma history, current life circumstances, past therapy treatment, and coping skills. If needed, we may do few 60 minute EMDR or general preparation sessions first to see how you respond before beginning intensives.

Step 2: Preparation

You will receive information on how to prepare, coping skills, and information on what to expect. You will also fill out a detailed intake form that will help me prepare everything for your session so we can hit the ground running.

Step 3: Intensive Day

Intensive session are generally 3 hours each. With preparation done beforehand, we will be free to use the entire time to reprocess, allowing you to make as much progress as possible. We will take a few breaks, and I will support you through the entire process. After the intensive you’ll need to plan time to rest, exercise, and sleep plenty that night.

Step 4: Follow-up and Re-assess

In the days after I will be available to answer any questions, and most people report feeling the positive benefits right away. A few days later we will do a no-cost follow-up by phone as well. Some people choose to do several intensives, for others one is enough to reach their goals or jumpstart their progress.

Why I like EMDR intensives:

EMDR is such an effective, research-based tool to treat acute and complex trauma, recent traumatic events, and phobias- however, one of the biggest barriers I see in treatment is 50-minute, weekly format. The weekly/bi-weekly therapy format can be a good fit for some types of treatment, but tends to water down the effectiveness of EMDR.

Clients may plan to use EMDR, but life happens, and they often (understandably) want to discuss things that have happened during week. This can delay EMDR processing until 20 minutes into the session, if we get to it at all. After leaving a few minutes at the end to regulate and calm, sometimes we only complete about 25 minutes of reprocessing. Combine this with cancellations, vacations, shifting treatment goals, and (normal) life concerns, EMDR often gets lost in the mix, and not enough processing is done for people to see results quickly.

EMDR intensives are a great way to bypass this barrier completely, immerse yourself in the healing process, make new neural connections more quickly, and make substantial progress towards your goals. They are a great fit for people who are have time limitations, or who ready to just dive in and make some some headway.
